Updates

On this page

Settings › About shows your version, with Check for updates. When an update is available, Update to <version> and restart downloads it, checks its signature against the key built into Short Leash, and restarts Short Leash.

Updates are served from downloads.shortleash.dev. Short Leash only installs updates signed with Short Leash's release key.

Short Leash also checks by itself a minute after it opens and then about once a day, while Check for updates automatically is on in Settings › About (it is unless you turn it off); Last checked says when. When it finds a new version, it says so once on your desktop, and the menu bar popover shows "Short Leash 0.15.0 is ready" (with the version) and Update and restart. If you're in a Pair call, Short Leash asks first, as restarting ends the call. A check that fails, offline for example, says nothing and tries again later. After an update, Short Leash restarts its background service on the new version too, so your sites run on the update straight away.

On Windows, Short Leash's background service keeps running while the update installs, and so can leash mcp under your editor. Windows won't replace a program that's running, so the installer renames the running copy (to leashd.exe.1.old, say) and puts the new one in its place. The old service keeps your sites up until Short Leash restarts it on the new version, and the next update deletes the renamed copies. If an earlier update stopped with "Error opening file for writing" naming leashd.exe, choose Abort, then download Short Leash from shortleash.dev and run the installer: it updates over the running service.

Your sites, services and their data are kept across updates, and so are webhook deliveries (held ones stay held), task lists, terminals with the end of their output, and the Overview's last hour of traffic. Requests, dumps and notifications start afresh. Release notes are in the changelog.

How do I update PHP, Node, Go and Ruby?

Choose Check for updates on the Runtimes screen. It lists each installed version with a newer patch release, such as PHP 8.4.23 to 8.4.26, or with a rebuild of the same PHP release from Short Leash's own builds (for example to add an extension). Short Leash also checks a few minutes after it starts and then once a day, and shows the number of updates on Machine in the rail and on Runtimes beside it.

Update installs one; Update all installs them in turn. Each download is checked exactly as an install is. PHP restarts on the new version, keeping Xdebug. For Node, Go and Ruby, the old version stays in place until the new one is ready and comes back if the update fails; running sites pick up the new version when they next start. Minor versions (PHP 8.4 to 8.5) aren't updates: install the new one on the Runtimes screen and make it the default when you're ready.

In the terminal:

Terminal window
