Tools

Machine › Tools has small utilities you'd otherwise look for online. Everything runs on this computer; nothing you paste leaves it.

Each tool fills the window, with its input and output side by side (stacked in a narrow window). Drag the line between them to resize. Text goes into code editors with line numbers and colors. What you paste stays while Short Leash runs, so you can switch tools and come back to it, but it's never saved: quit Short Leash and it's gone.

Tool What it does
Regex Test a pattern against text as you type. Matches and their groups are marked in the text and listed, and a replacement shows its result. Matching runs in the background and stops after 500 ms, so a pattern that backtracks too much can't freeze Short Leash. Copy as PHP and Copy as JavaScript copy the pattern for code.
JSON Format, minify and check JSON. An error marks its line in the input. The output shows Formatted text or a Tree that folds, with each value's type and each list's count; Copy path on a row copies its path. Path filters the output, such as .items[0].sku or .items[].sku. Indent and Sort keys change the output and leave your input alone.
Base64 Encode and decode text, Standard or URL-safe, or Encode a file…. A decoded image shows as a picture, with Save image and Copy as data URI.
URL Split a URL into its parts, and its query into a table you can edit: change, add or remove a row and the URL is rebuilt. Encode and decode as a component, a whole URL or a form.
JWT Read a token, its header, payload and signature colored, with its header and claims as JSON and dates made readable. Check its signature: HS256, HS384 and HS512 with the secret; RS, PS and ES algorithms and EdDSA with a PEM public key. The verdict names the algorithm it checked, as in "Signature valid (HS256)".
Timestamps Turn a Unix timestamp (seconds or milliseconds) or a date into local time, a time zone you choose, how long ago, and the forms code uses: ISO 8601 in UTC, Unix seconds and milliseconds, an HTTP date and SQL. Pick a date, time and zone to get its timestamp.
UUID and ULID Generate UUID v7, UUID v4 or ULID ids, as many as you need, uppercase or without hyphens, with Copy all. Paste a v7 UUID or a ULID to read the time it was made.
Hashes MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256 and SHA-512 of text or a file up to 512 MB, in hex or Base64, and HMAC with a key. Paste an expected hash to compare: the row that matches is marked.
